"LIVING WITH REINDEER: THE DUKHA OF THE MONGOLIAN TAIGA"

Northern Mongolia Tour
"LIVING WITH REINDEER: THE DUKHA OF THE MONGOLIAN TAIGA"

11 nights/12 days

3250

One of the world's last reindeer-herding communities and the only group known to ride reindeer. With only a few hundred people remaining, the Dukha's nomadic way of life in the remote Siberian taiga of northern Mongolia faces mounting threats.

In the Taiga of Khovsgol, the Tsaatan people, who are of Tuvan origin, live by herding reindeer and moving throughout the tour seasons.

They speak the Tuvan language among themselves, practice shamanism, and live in teepees.

Known as Tsaatan, or "those who have reindeer",in Mongolian, the Dukha rely on reindeer for milk, meat, skin, transportation, and antlers for crafting, weaving their culture identity into the rhythm of the taiga.

however, this heritage is under increasing strain.

Climate change is degrading grazing lands vital for reindeer survival, while urbaniation and the appeal of education and modern comforts pull younger generations away.

Tourism now plays a key role in supporting the Dukha, as visitors drawn to their unique culture and the serene taiga landscape provide income.

Our Tsaatan tour is designed to provide an authentic experience of the unique culture and lifestyle of the Tsaatan people. You will gain firsthand insights into reindeer herding, milking reindeer, riding them, tasting herbal teas, viewing handmade crafts made from antlers, and sampling traditional food.

Participants in this tour will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the daily life of the Tsaatan, witnessing and experiencing their customs and traditions up close.

We invite you to live among the Tsaatan people in the taiga and discover their cultural heritage.

Endless Gratitude to Boogii and Manal — the Heart of Gobi Girl

I want to begin by thanking Boogii and Manal — the extraordinary couple behind Gobi Girl — for the unforgettable journeys they’ve given me through Mongolia. I’ve traveled with them multiple times over the past few years, and each experience has been deeply personal, beautifully crafted, and full of heart. Their passion, generosity, and profound connection to Mongolia shape every moment of the journey. Whether we’re crossing the vast silence of the Gobi Desert or exploring the wild serenity of the Siberian taiga in the north, I always feel like I’m in the best possible hands — not just with expert guides, but with friends who genuinely care.

Every trip with them is a perfect blend of adventure, culture, and connection — not just with the landscapes, but with the people who call them home. From sharing meals with nomadic families to laughing around a fire under the stars, the memories I’ve made with Boogii and Manal are some of the most meaningful of my life.

If you’re looking to experience Mongolia in an honest, immersive, and unforgettable way, Gobi Girl is it. I can’t recommend them highly enough — and I can’t wait to travel with them again.
